This 217,000 square foot federal building, built in phases between 1912 and 1932 and on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, was nearly destroyed by a 1967 modernization. A complete renovation was done in the non-historic areas, upgrading mechanical systems, improving energy performance, and meeting current building and accessibility codes. A comprehensive historic restoration was done in the once ornate public areas and building exterior. Original materials were uncovered or replaced, fixtures and hardware were recreated, and previously forgotten hand-painted ornamental ceilings were restored. This GSA-owned facility benefited from $11,206,000 in improvements and, upon its completion in 1993, received a myriad of local, state, and national awards for Historic Preservation and Restoration.
